“A well spent day brings happy sleep”
For the past few years, sleep has played a mysterious game with me. Sometimes sleep wraps itself so tightly around me that it keeps me warm, safe, whole, like my favorite winter blanket. Other times, sleep is erratic, angry, desolate, making me feel alone, confused, and drained in the still darkness of the night. Since having children, sleep and I have been on a never-ending rollercoaster of ups and downs. It’s exhausting.
Throughout these exhaustive years, I’ve encountered three amazing (and I mean A-MA-ZING!) essential oils that have helped support well-rested sleep. Ready to learn more!?
Essential Oils for a Happy Sleep
Lavender to Relax & Sleep
Are you surprised to see this one on the list? Again, this essential oil is a must-have oil. It’s calming and soothing properties make this an oil that is used primarily for sleeping (and of course for supporting skin and occasional skin irritations and burns). dōTERRA’s Lavender can be used three ways, aromatically, topically, and internally. To promote sleep, consider using in your diffuser 1 hour prior to bedtime and put a drop or two on the bottom of your feet 30 minutes before bedtime. You can also put several drops of lavender in a glass spray bottle with water and use it to spray your sheets and pillows. The relaxing properties of lavender will remind you that sleep really is your friend! Oh, and it’s also a wonderful oil to use on your children that may need some extra help falling asleep.
Serenity to Reduce Worry & Stress
dōTERRA Serenity essential oil is the perfect blend to diffuse at bedtime for a restful night’s sleep, to calm a restless baby or child, or to help reduce the worry and stress so many of us feel. dōTERRA Serenity combines the soothing scents of Lavender, Marjoram, Roman Chamomile, and Ylang Ylang with the warming aromas of Hawaiian Sandalwood and Vanilla Bean to create a prized essential oil blend that every home, family, and individual needs. You can diffuse or topically use Serenity.
Vetiver for Calming, Grounding Effect
If you’ve not yet experienced the benefits of Vetiver, please, do yourself a huge favor, and order a bottle today! Vetiver is a member of the grass family, but unlike other grasses, the root system of Vetiver grows down, making it ideal for helping to prevent erosion and providing soil stabilization. Vetiver has a rich, exotic, complex aroma that is used extensively in perfumes. Due to Vetiver’s calming, grounding effect on the emotions, it is an ideal oil to use in massage therapy. It can also be rubbed on the feet before bedtime to promote a restful night’s sleep. When taken internally, Vetiver can support a healthy immune system. (Note that Vetiver is really thick, so either use an eye dropper or have a lot of patience 🙂
Someday, when my kids are grown…when the days seem shorter…when life seems to slow down, sleep will wrap me up in a warm blanket. It will care for me. Protect me. Serve me. Until then, I’ll relish the little pitter patter of footsteps running into my room in the middle of the night or the sweet cries of a baby that needs to be rocked. Until sleep comes, I’ll feel blessed for the essential oils that the earth has provided to all of us. I’ll continue to spend my days well and keep sleep as happy as I can.
How do you keep your sleep happy?
