“You are pregnant and you are powerful. You are bold and you are beautiful. Go forward in your boldness, in your beauty and in your contentedness. Trust your body to birth and know that the collective power of women worldwide will be with you.”
I remember so clearly when I found out I was pregnant for the first time. Within minutes of getting the results, I was a different person. I was no longer just me. In an instant, my life had more purpose, more direction. I felt bold. I felt beautiful. I felt blessed.
Pregnancy had always been mysterious and intriguing, and I so desperately craved it, but yet, being pregnant seemed far from my reality at the time. My husband and I had been married for just under a year, we were living in a hipster apartment in downtown Kansas City (perhaps not the best place to raise a child), and we had been intentionally trying to conceive for several months. It didn’t seem like it was going to happen for us. Every month, I would take a test and every month, I’d get the same sad news across the stick – negative. I would cry. My husband would embrace me. And, together, we would move on.
When I finally became pregnant, I really didn’t need a stick to tell me. I knew. I just knew! All at once I felt like I knew everything and nothing about the life growing inside of me. I decided from that point forward, I wanted to do everything in my power to live as naturally as possible. I wanted to provide the best environment I could for myself and my growing baby. Part of my journey was to, of course, eat nutritiously and incorporate prenatal vitamins, but I also started to incorporate essential oils. At the time, I didn’t really know what essential oils to use and probably used them imperfectly and inconsistently, but, throughout the years, I’ve learned which oils are best to use to support pregnancies and how to use them effectively. I’d love to share with you what I’ve learned so that you can support yourself and your growing baby in living bold, beautiful, natural lives.
Essential Oils for Pregnancy You Can’t Live Without:
Peppermint for Morning Sickness
People warn you about morning sickness and nausea, but there’s nothing quite like it until you experience it. I had terrible morning (like all day) sickness with my second pregnancy and it was awful. In efforts to combat morning sickness, I started putting a couple of drops of Peppermint in my water to ease my tummy. Total lifesaver. You can also dilute it with a carrier oil and rub on your abdomen or on the back of your neck to ease some tension.
Lavender for Relaxation
This oil is a pregnancy must-have! Adding Lavender to your routine can help soothe, relax, and calm you. You can use Lavender neat (although test on a patch of your skin first) or dilute with a carrier oil. Besides helping to relax you, the soothing properties in Lavender help to support your skin and blemishes that come from quickly changing hormones. Closer to labor or during labor, trying to relax can be difficult. Using Lavender or even Cedarwood is a great way to relieve some tension. You can apply to your feet, wrists, or neck or even diffuse. Keeping yourself relaxed and calm is key to letting nature take over during pregnancy and labor.
Frankincense for Cellular Health
In addition to taking a prenatal vitamin, maintaining a healthy diet, and continuing a gentle exercise routine, you should consider taking Frankincense. Frankincense should be continued for overall cellular health the months leading up to pregnancy, all throughout your pregnancy and beyond! Frankincense has incredibly small molecules and lipid soluble, and because of this, one drop of frankincense can cross the cell membrane and support every cell in your body. This ancient essential oil not only supports healthy cellular functions but can be used to support skin and promote feelings of satisfaction and balance.
Helichrysum to Reduce Appearance of Stretch Marks
Considered one of the top oils for promoting youthful skin, helpful for scars, and supportive of the immune system. Helichrysum oil is comprised of a chemical group called esters, which are generally known to be calming, relaxing, and to have balancing effects on mood. Esters can also help reduce the appearance of blemishes when applied topically. So, why is this an important pregnancy oil? Use it to reduce the appearance of stretch marks and the “Pregnancy Line” (Linea Nigra).
Deep Blue to Soothe Muscles & Joints
Towards the end of pregnancy, muscles and joints can ache so badly, particularly hips, legs and lower back. In addition to adding in chiropractic care from a Chiropractor that specializes in pregnancy, using Deep Blue can help soothe muscles and joints. It will become one of your best friends! The proprietary blend of wintergreen, camphor, peppermint, blue tansy, blue chamomile, helichrysum, and osmanthus work together to create a cooling/warming effect that soothes and relaxes muscles and achy joints.
Remember to follow your Mama intuition as you’re introducing essential oils into your daily routine. Understand that you may have different experiences with different oils, and know that we are here to support you in your journey. Also, remember that during this time of joy, change, discomfort, beauty, and life, that YOU know your body better than anyone else. And, to affirm you during this time, know that you are beautiful. You are bold. You are deserving. We are here with you!
